Base App

The gap between owning crypto and using it is where most people stall. This is aimed squarely at that gap.

The short answer

Base App is a mobile app for using onchain applications on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum layer 2. It combines a self custody wallet, payments, social feeds and mini apps in one place, with transaction fees typically well under a cent. It is the easiest way to go from a Coinbase balance to actually using onchain apps.

What it actually is

Base App is not an exchange. It is a self custody app for using Base, which is Coinbase's layer 2 network built on the OP Stack. You hold your own keys, and the app handles the parts that normally make that painful.

The combination is unusual: a wallet, a payments tool, a social feed and a directory of mini apps, all in one place, with fees so low they effectively disappear.

Who it is for

Coinbase users going onchain

Moving funds from a Coinbase account to Base takes seconds and costs nothing. This is the shortest path from exchange to onchain.

People who want crypto to feel normal

Payments and social in a familiar mobile format, without a browser extension or a seed phrase prompt on every action.

Anyone allergic to gas fees

Base fees are typically a fraction of a cent. You stop thinking about cost, which changes what you are willing to try.

What it costs

ActionTypical cost
Sending USDC on BaseA fraction of a cent
Swapping tokensWell under a cent in gas, plus the DEX fee
Moving funds from Coinbase to BaseFree or near free
Bridging from Ethereum mainnetEthereum gas, which is the expensive direction
The cheap way in
Fund it from a Coinbase account rather than bridging from Ethereum. The transfer is close to instant and avoids Ethereum mainnet gas entirely.

Honest assessment

Strengths

What works well

  • Genuine self custody with an interface that does not feel like it
  • Fees low enough to stop being a consideration
  • Direct Coinbase integration for funding
  • Mini apps make discovery far easier than hunting for URLs

Weaknesses

Real limitations

  • Base only. It is not a general multichain wallet
  • Base runs a centralized sequencer today, so it is not trustless in the way Ethereum is
  • Newer product, so expect rough edges and rapid change
  • You are still responsible for your recovery phrase

Getting started

  1. Install and create your account

Sign up and set up your wallet. Save the recovery information properly, exactly as you would with any self custody wallet.

  2. Fund it from Coinbase

Transfer USDC or ETH from your Coinbase account directly to Base. Seconds, and effectively free.

  3. Send something small to a friend

The clearest demonstration of what this technology does. Instant, near free, and it works across borders.

  4. Try a mini app

Browse the directory. Start with something that does not require a deposit.

Common questions

Is Base App the same as Coinbase Wallet?

They are related but different products. Coinbase Wallet is a general multichain self custody wallet. Base App is focused on the Base network with payments, social and apps built around it.

Is Base App self custody?

Yes. You control the keys, which also means you are responsible for the recovery method. Read seed phrase security before funding it meaningfully.

What is Base?

An Ethereum layer 2 built by Coinbase on the OP Stack. Transactions settle to Ethereum, and fees are a tiny fraction of mainnet. See our Base network page.
