The ten best DEXs to trade with self custody

Ranked on liquidity, track record, real cost and safety features. Not on reported volume, which is trivially inflated.

Updated 2026-08-307 min read
The short answer

The best decentralized exchanges for self custody traders are Uniswap for Ethereum and layer 2s, Jupiter for Solana, PancakeSwap for BNB Chain, Curve for stablecoin swaps, Aerodrome for Base, Raydium for new Solana listings, 1inch for protected routing, SushiSwap for breadth, KyberSwap for aggregation and THORChain for native cross chain swaps.

How we ranked these

Not by trading volume, which is easy to inflate. We weighted four things that actually matter to someone trading from their own wallet:

  • Liquidity depth on the pairs a normal person trades, because that determines your real cost
  • Track record, meaning years live, audits, and whether it has survived stress
  • Cost, combining pool fees and the network it runs on
  • Safety features, including sandwich protection and clear price impact warnings
Worth remembering
All ten are self custody. None of them hold your funds, none require an account, and none can help you if you send something to the wrong place.

The ten

Number 1

Uniswap

Uniswap turned market making into a formula. Anyone can create a market for any pair without asking permission, and it still has the deepest onchain liquidity on Ethereum.

Number 2

Jupiter

Jupiter searches every Solana DEX and splits your order for the best price. Most Solana wallets and apps quietly route through it.

Full review
Number 3

PancakeSwap

PancakeSwap is a full arcade. Swaps, farms, perpetuals, prediction markets and lotteries all sit under one roof, which is either great or distracting depending on your temperament.

Full review
Number 4

Curve Finance

Curve uses a different curve shape that assumes both sides are worth about the same. That makes stablecoin and staked asset swaps far cheaper.

Full review
Number 5

Aerodrome

Aerodrome lets token holders vote on where emissions go, which means projects bid for liquidity instead of paying for it directly.

Full review
Number 6

Raydium

Raydium is where a huge share of Solana token launches list first, which makes it the deepest source of early liquidity on the chain.

Full review
Number 7

1inch

1inch runs a Fusion mode where professional market makers compete to fill your order, which keeps it away from public mempool predators.

Full review
Number 8

SushiSwap

SushiSwap began as a fork of Uniswap and turned breadth into its advantage. If a chain has liquidity, Sushi is probably deployed there.

Full review
Number 9

KyberSwap

KyberSwap routes a single swap through several pools at once. On larger trades the routing difference can be worth real money.

Full review
Number 10

THORChain

THORChain settles natively on each chain. You send actual BTC and receive actual ETH, which removes the wrapped token risk entirely.

4Curve FinanceEthereumThe place to swap between stablecoins with almost no slippage.
5AerodromeBaseThe liquidity engine of Base, by a wide margin.
6RaydiumSolanaSolana's largest native AMM and the venue where most new tokens start trading.
71inchEthereumA veteran aggregator with strong protection against sandwich attacks.
8SushiSwapOver 30 networks including EthereumA multi chain DEX that runs almost everywhere you might want to trade.
9KyberSwapEthereumAn aggregator that splits your trade across many venues to find a better rate.
10THORChainNative BitcoinSwap real Bitcoin for real Ethereum without wrapping or bridging.

Common questions

Which DEX has the lowest fees?

Total cost is pool fee plus network gas, and the network usually dominates. A swap on Solana through Jupiter or on Base through Uniswap will beat almost anything on Ethereum mainnet.

Can I use these without a wallet?

No. A self custody wallet is required, because the trade executes from your address. See wallets by chain.

Is there an Orca DEX?

There is a Solana decentralized exchange called Orca. It is an unrelated project with no connection to Orca Crypto. We mention it only so nobody confuses the two.
