Every tool
Read live from a public index when the page loads. It measures sentiment, which is not the same thing as information.
Mood, assembled from market behavior
The index blends volatility, trading volume and momentum, social activity and Bitcoin's share of the market into one number between zero and a hundred. Zero is extreme fear. A hundred is extreme greed.
The reason people watch it is a genuinely useful observation: crowds are most confident near tops and most frightened near bottoms. Extreme readings have historically clustered around turning points.
Historically clustered near turning points is not the same as predicts turning points. The index sat in extreme greed for months at a time during the strongest runs, and buying every extreme fear reading on the way down means buying all the way down. It is a thermometer, not a signal.
As a check on yourself
Its real value is not telling you about the market. It is telling you about the state you are in when you make a decision, which you cannot see from the inside.
If you find yourself wanting to buy more than you planned, and the number is in the eighties, that is worth a pause. If you want to sell everything and the number is in the teens, same pause. Whether you act is up to you. Noticing the crowd feels the same way you do is the useful part.
Common questions
Who calculates it?
It is a public index built from volatility, volume and momentum, social activity and Bitcoin dominance. We read it live and we do not adjust it.
Should I buy at extreme fear?
We are not going to tell you what to buy. What we will say is that extreme fear readings have occurred repeatedly on the way down as well as at the bottom, and the ones at the bottom only looked obvious afterward.
Why does it not match how I feel?
Because it is measuring the market’s behavior, not yours. When it does match, that is the moment to slow down, because you are the crowd.
