Recovery planningAnyone with these words has your money, from anywhere in the world, permanently, with no way to reverse it. Losing them is the same as losing the money. Both failures come from the same sheet of paper, which is why where you put it matters as much as what you write.
Check it before you trust it
Read it back against the wallet
Word by word, in order, spelling each one. A single wrong word makes the whole phrase useless, and you will find that out at the worst possible moment.
Wipe the wallet and restore it
The only real test. Remove the wallet, restore from your written words, and confirm the same address comes back. Do this before the balance is worth anything.
Put the copies away separately
Different buildings if you can. A safe, a deposit box, a trusted relative. Not both in the desk the laptop sits on.
Consider metal for real amounts
Paper survives most things but not fire or flood. Steel backup plates are cheap next to what they protect.
Common questions
Why not just store it in my password manager?
Because then your crypto is only as safe as that account, and a password manager is an internet connected target with your entire life in it. Paper cannot be phished, cannot be exfiltrated, and does not sync.
Is it safe to print?
The sheet you print is blank. It has numbered lines and nothing else, and the words never touch the computer. Office and shared printers keep job histories, so print from a printer you control.
What about splitting it between locations?
Splitting a phrase into halves is a common idea and a bad one: it can weaken the phrase and it doubles the ways to lose access. Whole copies in separate secure places is the approach that keeps working.
