Every comparison
Which one, and why
You hold across many chains, including Solana, and you want the widest asset and app support of any hardware wallet.
Full Ledger pageYou want fully open source firmware and you are mainly holding Bitcoin and major assets rather than chasing every new chain.
Full Trezor pageLedger for coverage, Trezor for openness. Both are enormously safer than keys on a laptop, and the argument between them matters far less than actually buying one and setting it up properly.
The specifications
| Ledger | Trezor | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Hardware | Hardware |
| Networks | Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and thousands more | Bitcoin, Ethereum and most major assets |
| Custody | Self custody, keys in a secure chip | Self custody, keys on device |
| Strongest at | Broad asset support, works with MetaMask and Phantom, small and portable | Open source firmware you can audit, excellent Bitcoin support |
| Weakest at | Closed source firmware, and the 2020 customer data leak still bothers people | Fewer supported chains than Ledger, and no secure element on older models |
The parts that change the answer
Asset and chain support
Ledger supports more chains, and notably supports Solana well. If your holdings are spread across ecosystems this usually decides it.
Open source firmware
Trezor firmware is fully open. Ledger keeps parts of its secure element closed, which is a genuine philosophical difference and a real argument in the community.
The recovery phrase is the same problem either way
Both hand you words to write down, and both are only as safe as where you put them. The device protects the key from your computer; nothing protects the phrase from a photograph of it.
Buy direct, always
Never buy a hardware wallet from a marketplace listing or a third party seller. A tampered device is the one attack the hardware itself cannot defend against.
Common questions
Is Ledger still safe after its data breach?
Can I move from one to the other?
Do I need a hardware wallet?
