Ethereum vs Solana

Two different answers to how a blockchain should scale.

The short answer

Which one, and why

Choose Ethereum if

You want the largest developer ecosystem, the deepest liquidity and the most conservative security assumptions, with the scaling done in layers above.

Choose Solana if

You want everything on one fast chain with fees measured in fractions of a cent, and you accept heavier hardware requirements for validators.

Our verdict

Ethereum scales outward through rollups; Solana scales the base layer itself. Both work. The one you should use is the one where the apps and the liquidity you actually want already live.

Where they actually differ

The parts that change the answer

Two scaling philosophies

Ethereum keeps layer 1 conservative and pushes activity to rollups. Solana makes the single chain as fast as possible. Neither is obviously right, and it is the central architectural disagreement in crypto.

Fees and speed

Solana finalizes in seconds for a fraction of a cent. Ethereum layer 1 is slower and dearer; its layer 2s are competitive on both, with a bridging step in between.

Fragmentation against outages

Ethereum spreads liquidity across dozens of rollups, which is its real cost. Solana keeps everything in one place and has had network halts, which is its.

Ecosystem

Ethereum has more capital, more tooling and more auditors. Solana has faster consumer applications and a stronger retail trading culture.

Common questions

Is Solana more centralized than Ethereum?
Its validator hardware requirements are higher, which raises the cost of participating. Both have measurable decentralization tradeoffs and the honest answer depends on which measure you use.
Do I need different wallets?
Yes. Solana uses a different key format, so MetaMask cannot hold it. Phantom and Backpack cover both worlds now.
Which is cheaper to use?
Solana on the base layer. Ethereum layer 2s are comparable once you are on them, and getting there costs a bridge transaction.
