Fees, and the way back up
Fees look trivial one trade at a time. A quarter of a percent each way is half a percent round trip, which sounds like nothing until you notice it comes off every trade you ever make, in both directions, whether you were right or wrong. Twenty round trips is ten percent of the position gone before the market did anything.
The second one is worse, and it is pure arithmetic. A loss and the gain needed to undo it are not the same size. Down fifty percent needs a hundred percent to get back. Down eighty needs four hundred. This is why position sizing matters more than entries do.
| If you are down | You need this gain to get back to flat |
|---|---|
| 10% | 11% |
| 25% | 33% |
| 50% | 100% |
| 75% | 300% |
| 90% | 900% |
| 95% | 1,900% |
Nothing about a token being cheaper than it was makes it likelier to return. The chart has no memory of what you paid.
Common questions
Why is my breakeven higher than my entry?
Because you paid to get in and you will pay to get out. Price has to cover both before you are flat. On a low fee venue that gap is small. On a high fee one, plus a wide spread, it can be most of a small move.
Does this handle a partial sell?
Run it with the quantity you actually sold. The rest of the position is a separate calculation at whatever price you eventually exit.
Are taxes included?
No. This is the trade result before any tax. What you owe depends on where you live and how long you held, and we are not qualified to tell you.
