The short answer

Everything except Bitcoin, added up. It is the most watched of the derived totals because it isolates the question people actually ask. When somebody says "alts are moving", TOTAL2 is the number that would show it.

What it measures

The plain description

Everything except Bitcoin, added up. It is the most watched of the derived totals because it isolates the question people actually ask.

When somebody says "alts are moving", TOTAL2 is the number that would show it.

How it is worked out

Stated so you could reproduce it

TOTAL minus the Bitcoin market cap. On this board it is computed as TOTAL multiplied by one minus Bitcoin dominance, from the same response, so the three totals always agree with each other.

How to read it

The bands, and what each one actually means

ReadingWhat it indicates
Rising faster than TOTALMoney is favouring things other than Bitcoin. This is the condition people mean by a broadening market.
Flat while TOTAL risesThe move is Bitcoin. Dominance will be rising at the same time, and it is the same fact stated twice.
Falling faster than TOTALRisk-off. Alts fall harder than Bitcoin in a sell-off far more often than not.
What it does not tell you

The part that gets left out

  • It still contains every stablecoin. About a tenth of TOTAL2 can be dollars rather than positions, which blunts it as a risk measure.
  • It still contains Ethereum, which is large enough to dominate the reading on its own. That is what TOTAL3 exists to strip out.
  • It inherits every weakness of TOTAL: estimated supplies, thin markets and provider specific asset lists.
Before you act on any of it
Every meter on this site is context for a decision, never the decision. None of them predicts anything, and the ones that look most like signals are the ones worth trusting least.

Common questions

What is the difference between TOTAL2 and TOTAL3?
TOTAL2 removes Bitcoin. TOTAL3 removes Bitcoin and Ethereum. If TOTAL2 is rising strongly while TOTAL3 is flat, the move is Ethereum rather than the broad market.
Why is TOTAL2 more useful than Bitcoin dominance?
They are close relatives, but TOTAL2 is a level rather than a ratio, so it does not move when the denominator changes. Dominance can fall purely because new tokens listed; TOTAL2 rising means the assets in it actually gained value.
Should I exclude stablecoins from it?
It would be a better risk measure if you could, and no widely published version does. Reading the stablecoin dominance tiles alongside it is the practical substitute.
