The short answer

The mirror image, where large holders sell into strength before a markdown.

Buying climaxRangeUpthrustMarkdown
Wyckoff distribution. Reversal, bearish.

What you are looking at

A buying climax, a reaction down, a retest, then a final push above resistance that fails immediately. That failure is called the upthrust.

How traders act on it

The trigger is losing support after the upthrust fails, with the high of the upthrust as the invalidation level.

Closes, not touches
Wait for a close beyond the level, not a touch. Intraday spikes through a level that reverse before the close are extremely common, and they exist partly because so many stops sit just beyond.

When it fails

The same criticism applies. It is a compelling story laid over a chart that has already happened, and it is far easier to name afterward than to trade in advance.

Failure is normal and it is not a problem, provided you decided your invalidation level before entering and sized the position so that being wrong is survivable. See risk management.

Other patterns

Common questions

What is an upthrust?
A push above the range resistance that fails immediately, trapping breakout buyers. In the schematic it is the mirror of the spring and it marks the end of distribution.
How do I tell distribution from accumulation in real time?
Honestly, you often cannot, and that is the main criticism of the whole framework. The same sideways range looks like both until it resolves. Waiting for the resolution costs you the first part of the move and saves you from the wrong half of the calls.

Where to go next

Practice spotting these

We go through live charts together and separate the real setups from the shapes your brain wants to see. That second skill is the harder one.
