Free tokens distributed to past users of a protocol.

Projects distribute tokens to early users as a reward and to decentralize ownership. Some airdrops have been worth thousands of dollars per wallet.

This has created airdrop farming, where people use protocols specifically to qualify. It has also created a huge number of fake airdrops designed to drain wallets.

In practice

Never connect your main wallet to an unexpected airdrop site. Real airdrops usually let you claim from the project's own domain, and often do not require a signature that moves assets.

What people get wrong

That an airdrop is free money with no downside. Claiming one means signing a transaction, and fake claim pages are one of the most reliable ways wallets get drained. The real ones also arrive unannounced, so anything urgently telling you to claim is suspect.

Common questions

How do I qualify for an airdrop?
By genuinely using a protocol before it has a token, which is unknowable in advance. Anybody selling a guaranteed list is selling you something.
Are airdrops free money?
They can be taxable on receipt in many places, and claiming one has been the vector for real thefts. Free is doing a lot of work in that phrase.

Some of these land faster in conversation than in writing. Sessions are one to one and you can ask anything, including the things that feel too obvious to ask.
