Fear of missing out, and the most reliable way to buy a local top.

FOMO is the urge to buy because something is already moving up fast and you cannot stand watching without participating. It is the emotion most responsible for buying at the worst possible moment.

The uncomfortable truth is that FOMO peaks exactly when risk peaks. The chart looks most exciting right before the people who bought early start selling to the people who just arrived.

In practice

If your reason for buying is that it went up 40 percent today, that is FOMO, not analysis.
