Hot wallets are browser extensions and phone apps. They are convenient and necessary for actually using onchain apps, and they are exposed to whatever is on the device.

The sensible pattern is a hot wallet with a small working balance and a hardware wallet for the rest.

Treat your hot wallet like the cash in your pocket. Useful, replaceable, never your life savings.

What people get wrong

That a hot wallet is unsafe and a cold one is safe. Both hold keys; the difference is exposure. A hot wallet holding a spending amount you can afford to lose is a perfectly sensible tool, and using one for your entire holding is not.

Is a hot wallet safe to use?

For amounts you are actively trading with, yes, that is what it is for. The rule most experienced people follow is that a hot wallet holds what they would not mind losing.

Is a phone wallet hotter or colder than a browser wallet?

A phone is generally safer, because apps are sandboxed from each other and there are no malicious extensions. Both are still hot.
