Proving a statement is true without revealing why.
A zero knowledge proof lets one party convince another that something is true while revealing nothing beyond that fact. In rollups it proves a batch of transactions was executed correctly.
The same math enables privacy applications: proving you are over eighteen without revealing your birthday, or proving you hold a balance without revealing the amount.
A ZK proof of a million transactions can be verified in milliseconds, which is what makes ZK rollups scale.
That zero knowledge means anonymous. It means proving a statement without revealing the underlying data. That can be used for privacy and it is more often used for compression, which is why most zero knowledge work in crypto is about scaling.
