Definition

Someone outside crypto, used affectionately more often than not.

Normie describes people who have not adopted crypto. It shows up in phrases like normie adoption, meaning the moment the technology reaches ordinary users.

Every serious project is trying to attract normies, because that is where the next hundred million users are.

In practice

Good design for normies means hiding seed phrases, gas and chain switching behind something that just works.

What people get wrong

That normie marks an outsider who does not understand. Most of the world is outside crypto and manages perfectly well, and the word is used as often by people who arrived last month as by anyone else. It is mostly a way of signaling that you are inside.

Common questions

Is normie an insult?
Mostly affectionate, sometimes condescending. It describes anybody outside the subculture, which is to say almost everybody.
Why does the word exist?
Small communities need a word for the outside. In crypto it also carries a claim about being early, which is the part that grates on people.

Want this explained out loud?

Some of these land faster in conversation than in writing. Sessions are one to one and you can ask anything, including the things that feel too obvious to ask.
