A layer 2 that bundles many transactions into one settlement on the base chain.
A rollup executes transactions off chain and posts compressed data plus a proof or a challenge window back to layer 1. Thousands of transactions share the cost of a single posting.
Two families exist. Optimistic rollups assume validity and allow challenges. ZK rollups prove validity mathematically before settling.
Rollup fees dropped sharply once Ethereum added a cheaper data lane specifically for them.
