Definition

A token on one chain that represents an asset held on another.

Wrapping locks the original asset with a custodian or contract and issues a matching token elsewhere. Wrapped Bitcoin on Ethereum is the best known example.

The wrapped token is only as good as whoever holds the original. That is a real counterparty risk, and it is easy to forget because the token trades normally.

In practice

WBTC on Ethereum is redeemable for real BTC only because a custodian holds it. THORChain avoids this by swapping natively instead.
