Decentralized identity moves credentials from company databases into cryptographic attestations you hold yourself. You can prove a claim, such as being over eighteen or having completed a course, without the verifier calling any central authority.
The promise is real and the ecosystem is early. Standards exist, adoption is patchy, and the hard part is not the cryptography but getting institutions to issue and accept credentials.
A zero knowledge credential could prove you are over eighteen without revealing your birthday, your name or which country issued the document.
