Definition
Total value locked, the dollar value of assets held in a protocol.
TVL is the headline metric for DeFi size. It counts everything deposited in a protocol's contracts, valued in dollars.
Treat it carefully. TVL rises when token prices rise even if no new deposits arrive, and double counting is common when assets are looped between protocols.
